Orange County Polo Club “races for the cure” in October

Yes, you heard it right.  The dogs of the Orange County Polo Club “race for the cure” as the club helped to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® organization during October’s breast cancer awareness month.  This fan favorite of the evening served as the half time show as the dogs lined up and raced for the polo crowd!

This breast cancer fundraising event featured “Ladies Night” Polo.  The “Ladies Night” theme came from the fact that the polo players for this event, were all ladies.  In fact, some of the best female polo players in Southern California came in support of this worthwhile cause.  Both teams were dressed in pink, both hot pink and pastel pink.  The match placed the “Pink Ladies” of So Cal Self Storage VS Point West Financial’s “Warriors in Pink”.

One side note, we mentioned that the players were all ladies…..However; one of the ladies had to cancel at the last moment.  So, in order to keep the match on schedule, Heather Perkins the OC Polo Club Manager had to think quickly.  She looked over at Eric Munk, one of the Club’s player/members who was just helping out by setting up a sponsor tent, and said, “Munk, get suited up, you are playing tonight”.  Thus, “Erica” Munk, female player for the night was born.  Jennifer “on the spot” Alexy, ran out to a local store and picked up a wig for the new “Erica Munk” to wear as part of the ladies team and the team was ready to take to the field.  When asked about dressing up as a female to play in support of the event, Munk replied, “You know, I am glad to do it, this is a great cause and having seen my mother and grandmother fight breast cancer, it is personal to me and I also know this cause is personal to many of the others players and supporters here tonight.  Additionally, many people do not know that breast cancer may also affect men, so I am also representing for the men too!”

The teams now complete, lining up to take the field were the “Pink Ladies” of So Cal Self Storage, Michele Everett, Jessica Bailey, Kate Weber and Chris Karp.  Point West Financial’s “Warriors in Pink”, Heather Perkins, Jennifer Alexy and Eric, “Erica” Munk.

Starting with the first “throw in” the game was fast paced and exciting to watch.  The pink jerseys glowed under the soft bright lights of the polo arena and fans cheered as the Pink Ladies scored and cheered again when the Warriors in Pink answered back with goals of their own.

Perhaps just as engaging as the polo, was was the half time show.  The members of the OC Polo Club organized their own dogs to “Race for the Cure”.  Hay bales were set up to serve as starting gates, a bright white finish line was marked at the end of the arena, and Umpire Denny Geiler made sure the racing was fair.  This was as official as it gets.  These special dogs wore “jockeys” attached to their backs and were as most fans exclaimed, “Just as cute as can be”.  These fans have more than just competitive reasons to cheer.  One lucky fan would also win the opportunity drawing of an overnight stay at a luxurious resort hotel and dinner for two. The stay includes resort fee and overnight valet parking.  This race / drawing proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® organization.

The dog race for the cure was a huge hit!  The crowd was totally amped up cheering for their favorite dogs.  The race was broken down into three qualifying heats and one final race.  This final race was Bandit “Git er Dun” Everett VS Bella “The Princess” Alexy.  The start was tense, paws shaking in the soft arena dirt, the “go” was given and they took off, Bella out in front early, Bandit making up ground mid field, in the end Bella “The Princess” took the victory!

Polo play resumed in the arena.  The game was tight, Pink Ladies up by one, two, Warriors in Pink up by one.  The middle of the last period was super competitive as the Warriors in Pink tied it up.  Then, with only 52 seconds left, the Warriors in Pink made one more goal to take the lead, winning by a score of 10 to 9!

The special event night ended ended with the musical stylings of Julie Gribble, Vocal/Guitar/Songwriter.  Julie’s unique style seemed to come naturally and her lyrics were able to inspire, and reach people during the evening.  Her Traditional Americana/Country Music, entranced the audience with her modern stories of life, love and relationships.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®:

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
